I've been a graphic artist for almost 8 years now and i can say that i still lack so many design fundamentals. All of the techniques that i have right now are based on my personal experience and i haven't read or took a related course.

What is Kerning?

In typography, kerning (less commonly mortising) is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font, usually to achieve a visually pleasing result.

Not every font types have the best kerning. Always use manual kernings for it will give you more control. You can access kerning by going into your character panel whether its Photoshop, Corel or any other related softwares.
